A Unique Curriculum for 5th and 6th Graders

How to Use Youth Reaching Higher:

     Aim For Success, Inc. is pleased to present Youth Reaching Higher. This is an entertaining way to empower students to dream big and realize they can achieve great success. After all, they are living in America where big dreams actually can come true!
     Think back to the 1st or 2nd grade. Can you remember sitting in a circle on the floor with all your classmates as your teacher read you a story? Sure you can! That was the highlight of the day. Especially if your teacher read the story with great enthusiasm! Youth Reaching Higher can have the same impact. Your students may very well experience fond memories of these 8 lessons for the rest of their lives – especially if you present the lessons with great enthusiasm. In fact, think of this curriculum as a big picture book you’re reading to your class. But instead of reading from a book, you’ll be reading from the PowerPoint on the screen. And instead of turning pages, you will be clicking a remote.
     Not only will students be challenged to dream of a bright future, they will learn the importance of setting goals and having a positive attitude. They will also learn the importance of standing tall and saying, “No!” when it comes to risky behaviors such as smoking, drinking alcohol, using drugs, and having sex. Students will meet Sam, Rochelle and Candy through video clips. The difficult challenges these three people faced when they were young will serve as a reminder to your students that the choices they make today will have a significant impact on their futures.

Youth Reaching Higher has been successfully used in 5th and 6th grade. The response of the students may differ depending on their maturity level.
The curriculum consists of 8 lessons. It will take approximately 50 minutes to complete each lesson. The length can be adjusted by altering the class discussion. It’s recommended one lesson be covered each week.

(Note: Lessons 4, 5 and 6 and the Introduction for the facilitator contain embedded videos. The Introduction will also demonstrate how to use the curriculum.)

What You Will Need

·     A computer with Microsoft PowerPoint (97-2007)
·     A projector
·     A screen, white board or blank wall to project onto
·     A remote control – helpful but not required
·     Speakers attached to your computer to amplify the sound of the embedded videos for lessons      ·     4, 5 and 6. (Speakers for the closing Rap in each lesson are optional.)
